Delegate Israel O’Quinn Appointed to Governor Bob McDonnell’s Rural Jobs Council

Governor Bob McDonnell announced on Thursday that Delegate Israel O’Quinn (R – Washington) was appointed to the Governor’s newly established Rural Jobs Council.  The Governor’s Rural Jobs Council was established by Executive Order Number 57 to harness the unlimited potential in rural Virginia and create greater opportunities for economic growth.  By being appointed to this council, Delegate O’Quinn will have the opportunity to voice and address the job needs of Southwest Virginia.  The Rural Jobs Council is charged with the following responsibilities:

1.      Identify impediments to and opportunities for job creation in Rural Virginia

  1. Recommend strategies to improve the K-12 education and the workforce pipeline
  2. Produce a comprehensive and meaningful Economic and Infrastructure Policy for Rural Virginia; and
  3. Make recommendations to improve the tax and regulatory environment in the Commonwealth to maintain and increase the Commonwealth’s standing as the best place to do business in the United States of America.

“Despite the national economic situation, Virginia’s economy is very strong.  However, rural Virginia is still hurting, especially in the Southwest.  With my appointment to this council, I will be able to help focus on those needs in our area and work to get the Southwest Virginia economy moving again,” said Delegate O’Quinn on his appointment.  “I look forward to joining with my fellow Southwest Virginians on the council in striving to help build a stronger economy in our part of the Commonwealth.”

The creation of the Governor’s Rural Jobs Council and Delegate O’Quinn’s appointment to the council are a great advantage for Southwest Virginia.  By having a native Southwest Virginian on the council, our region will have a strong voice in the struggle to bring much needed jobs to our area.

Delegate Israel O'Quinn represents the Fifth House District, which is comprised of the Cities of Bristol and Galax, Grayson County and parts of Smyth and Washington Counties.
